The Institute of Banking and Finance is particularly aimed at students who want to work in the fields of corporate finance, risk management or data science in their professional lives.

 

We offer a diverse teaching program that includes basic lectures such as Decision Analysis, Investment and Finance, Corporate Finance as well as in-depth lectures on topics such as Behavioral Finance or Hedge Funds. In addition, there are seminars and special events with industry partners.

      In this empirically oriented seminar, students independently work on capital market-related issues using numerical software (R or Python). The results are then evaluated economically and presented scientifically.

    • Introduction to Scientific Research (271042)

      This course provides fundamental knowledge of scientific working: structuring a scientific paper, providing a literature review, finding appropriate data sources, and how to analyze data sets with suitable quantitative methods.

      The introductory course to scientific working methods particulalry prepares students to independently write a seminar paper, term paper or thesis at the IBF or in the field of finance. It addresses the requirements for the design of scientific papers and literature reviews. In addition, the basics of LaTeX and analytical software (Python, R) are taught. The latter are particularly important as all theses and seminars at the IBF include an empirical analysis.

      Comments:

      We strongly recommend that students who are writing a seminar paper, term paper or thesis at the IBF for the first time attend this course. The introduction to academic work at the IBF takes place as a face-to-face course over several sessions in the first weeks of the lecture period. It consists of lectures on the individual subject areas and practical exercises using the software presented. The course is organised via the Stud.IP event.

      In addition, we provide an ILIAS module that contains an alternative introduction to R.

      Students learn how to improve decision making processes. Following a discussion of important structural aspects of decision problems, I will specifically cover multi-attribute decision making, decisions under risk and uncertainty, and decision making with incomplete information. Potential applications cover various fields such as economics, politics, and medicine as well as personal life. I will also discuss typical biases in individual decision making.

      In this empirically oriented seminar, students independently work on practical issues of company valuation with the help of numerical software (Excel, Matlab, R, Python). The results are then evaluated economically and presented scientifically.

      The seminar takes place as a block course. Evaluation is based on the seminar paper and its presentation.
